A deadly E. coli outbreak linked to bagged spinach has spread to a ninth
state, with Ohio officials reporting seven cases, The Associated Press
reports.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts
of New Jersey until 2 p.m. Friday.
Major flooding has been reported in the Bayville area of Berkeley
Township and Toms River. Officials also say numerous underpasses on the
Garden State Parkway are flooded with up to five feet of water.
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall is expected to cause flooding of
small creeks and streams in urban areas, including highways, streets,
underpasses and other drainage areas and low-lying spots.
More thunderstorms with heavy rain are located over south Ocean County.
Flash flood warnings have been issued for Seaside Heights, Pleasant
Plains, Mantoloking, Leisure Village, Lakewood, Lakehurst, Holiday City,
Cedar Glen Lakes, Brick Township and Beachwood.
Residents are urged to avoid travel into or through the Bayville area.

Ford Motor Co. will offer buyout packages of up to $140,000 to all of
the more than 75,000 workers at its U.S. plants, the United Auto Workers
union said yesterday, a day before the automaker details a revised

The attack against the U.S. Embassy in Damascus, Syria, was a "terrorist
operation," Syrian Interior Minister Bassam Abdel Majid told Syrian
state television Sept. 12. The Syrians' ability to foil the attack will
allow Damascus to improve its relations with Washington to some extent,
though Syria's close relationship with Iran will prevent the two sides
from making a significant diplomatic breakthrough.
